The first of two 1997 CDs to release the soundtrack appearances of Louis Armstrong on the Bing Crosby Chesterfield TV series (the follow-up release is Havin' More Fun) features plenty of harious moments. The mutual respect and love that Satch and Bing had for each other is obvious; the writing is inspired. and Armstrong is extremely funny, often causing Crosby to crack up. Trombonist Jack Teagarden, violinist Joe Venuti and singers Ella Fitzgerald ("Undecided") and Peggy Lee appear as strong supporting characters. In adtion to the joking around, there is plenty of fine music, most notably "Royal Garden Blues," "Blueberry Hl," "On the Sunny Side of the Street" and such collaborations by Bing and Satch as "A Kiss to Bud a Dream On," "Gone Fishin'" and two versions of "Lazy Bones." Highly recommended, even though the liner notes do not say a thing about these performances. ~ Scott Yanow
